Ep159: Permanent Daylight Saving: The Negative Effects of Time Change with Dr. Karin Johnson
OVERVIEW
“Time change is disruption is bad. People are more tired. We know there's more heart attacks, more strokes, more accidents.”
In recent years, the debate over whether or not to keep Daylight Saving Time (DST) permanent has been a hot topic. While some states are advocating for permanent DST, others are advocating for permanent Standard Time (ST). Dr. Karin Johnson, the medical director of Bay State Health Regional Sleep Program and the vice president of Save Standard Time, a volunteer-run nonprofit advocating for permanent ST, is a strong proponent of the latter.
Dr. Johnson believes that keeping ST permanent is the better option due to the long-term effects of DST. She notes that when people change the time twice a year, there are acute effects, such as increased fatigue, heart attacks, strokes, accidents, and lower test scores among students. Additionally, studies have found that marathon runners run slower on DST weekends.
